I made this chest for my daughter, several years ago, when she was married. It was a lot of work. Lyptus is very hard. However, she moved out and it was all worth it. What I mean is, well she really liked the chest making it worth the effort and, well - she did move out. So, that's what I was trying to say.
This was my first attempt at using the Leigh dovetail jig and a stationary mortiser. I used five (5) coats of Danish oil. The grain really popped and the color of the Lyptus is beautiful. Not only is Lyptus very hard, it is very, very heavy.
Lyptus is a type of eucalyptus that is commercially grown in South America by Warehouser. They say it only takes 16 years to go from seed to ready to cut. It does have some oils in the wood. A splinter really stings. In spite of the hard wood and the splinters, I really enjoy working with Lyptus and I very much appreciate that it is from production farms.
